I cannot separate myself from my work. Everything I create is shaped by what’s happening in my life. Not in a negative way, but in the sense that everything I move through eventually finds its way into what I create. The beginning of this year felt heavy. There was a lack of balance in more ways than one. And as I began working on a new body of paintings, without a plan as always, I found myself landing on a need for balance. Not just visually, but internally. This new work is still vibrant and expressive, but I’m approaching it slightly differently. There’s a bit more pause. A bit more awareness. Not too much, because overplanning, for me, kills the painting. But enough to shift how I move within it. I’ve found myself narrowing in. The materials feel more intentional this time, each piece carrying collage within it, and a deep blue that keeps returning, something I feel deeply connected to right now. I don’t begin with a mantra. I discover it. As the painting develops, it starts to speak. At some point, I begin to recognize a message within it, something that was already there, waiting to be understood. In one of the recent pieces, I typed out those words once they became clear, and kept them beside me as I worked. Not to control the painting, but to stay connected to what was already there. I’m curious to see where this collection leads. It’s unfolding slowly, and that feels right. This new series will include 8 to 10 pieces. I’ll be sharing glimpses along the way, but not the full works. The full collection will be shared here first.
